Mobile VR seems to be steadily growing in numbers, repeatedly outpacing the PC-based tethered VR solutions. In particular, it came to a surprise to us to see how quickly the numbers had grown for sales of the Google Daydream View, and when we realized its sales were higher than the HTC Vive & Oculus Rift systems COMBINED, we took notice.
What was not a surprise, however, is the continued dominance of the Samsung Gear VR. We keep hammering the “Content is King” here at 360VR Community, and boy is Samsung ever aggressive on that front! With over 700 Apps available on the Oculus Store for Gear VR and a rapidly growing number of Live Concerts, most of them exclusive to the platform, Samsung gear is clearly playing the content game. Also not surprising: the PlayStation VR still (kind of logically) heavily leads its tethered counterparts.
Here are the numbers, as provided by SuperData, for the 1st Fiscal Quarter of 2017:
Gear VR: 782,000
PlayStation VR: 375,000
Google Daydream: 170,000
HTC Vive: 95,000
Oculus Rift: 64,000
