Public Awareness of Virtual Reality DOUBLES Yearly – And Guess Who Leads the Way

When the New York-based research firm Nielsen issues a consumer report, brands pay attention, and deservedly so, as the firm has more than simply paid its dues. The firm issued a report on June 10th, and it is a very positive one for the Virtual Reality industry as a whole.

Nielsen’s ‘U.S Games 360 2017‘ report states that from over 2000 people (50% male/female split) interviewed, 27% of people aged between 25-34 said that they intended to buy a VR headset, with 17% of 18-24 year olds saying the same. Of that group, 69% were men, 31% were women.

Let’s do a quick breakdown of the report. All Images courtesy of Nielsen.

The image below explains that of the respondents who identified themselves as Gamers, who totalled nearly 40%, 19% of them had the intention of purchasing either a Sony Playstation VR or a Samsung Gear VR.

The next image shows the awareness of the General Population, over 13 years of age, in regards to the different VR Platforms. Samsung seems to be doing a great job in marketing its products, leading the way at 34%, while the HTC VIVE surprisingly trails at 10% recognition.

When it comes to Gamers, the following image honestly surprised us. We would have never expected for a whopping 43% of Gamers to identify the Samsung Gear VR as the most popular platform. Then again, we should have recognize the popularity of Mobile Gaming before making those assumptions! Although that still doesn’t quite explain how HTC trails, of all things, the Google Cardboard

While this bodes for VR, we are slightly puzzled by the lack of reporting on one of our favorite platforms, the Google Daydream. Here’s to hoping the mid-2017 report will correct that omission.
