Felix & Paul Studios is considered by most of the 360VR Community as the Pioneers of the current wave of 360º Cinematographers. Their work with Cirque du Soleil, LeBron James, the Fox Innovation Labs and more has been highly praised.
‘The People’s House – Inside the White House with Barack and Michelle Obama’ earned the Montreal-based duo of Felix Lajeunesse & Paul Raphael the 2017 Primetime Emmy® Award for Outstanding Original Interactive Program this past September.
Today at Sundance Festival, they finally showcase their multi-episode 360VR Documentary “Space Explorers: A New Dawn”. When we first spoke about the project, still in pre-production at the time, during a chat at the IX Symposium in June of 2017, Paul was quite taken by the opportunity to work with the NASA, as Space was “an obsession since childhood” for both longtime collaborators. He was candid in sharing a story about working with their engineers to secure stability on a specific shot, having to pinch himself. Kinda cool, right?!
The Documentary will focus on the US Space Agency’s new Space Travel ambitions, shed light on some of NASA’s plans, and interviews with astronauts-in-training for missions on the International Space Station.
Gotta love a good strategy: the first episode (duration: 19min) will be released simultaneously along with the upcoming Facebook release of the Oculus GO Standalone Mobile VR Headset. So we’re guessing that’ll be “Arriving Early 2018” as the website says.
When asked to comment about the Emmy Award in a more recent conversation, Raphael said: “It’s an amazing feeling to have virtual reality, and our piece, recognized for a Creative Arts Emmy Award. Working on this experience, with the Obamas at a reflective moment in President Obama’s tenure, and being able to gain access to this monumental building was, in itself, a win to us. Being honoured by the Television Academy was an incredible way to conclude this journey. It points to a larger acceptance of virtual reality in the entertainment space, and a step forward for the medium as a whole. Hopefully this win will inspire others to produce great VR content, and push audiences and headset owners to start looking and demanding great VR content as well.”
