During Oculus Connect in 2016, Facebook Oculus announced it had partnered with Warner Brothers to create a total of three Virtual Reality Experiences to support Blade Runner 2049, the Denis Villeneuve-Directed sequel to the cult classic Blade Runner. This past July, we got our first taste via Blade Runner 2049: Replicant Pursuit on Samsung’s Gear VR. We played it, we loved it.
Yesterday, among all of the exciting announcements during OC4, the 2nd of 3 Blade Runner 2049 experiences was made official: Blade Runner 2049: Memory Lab. In Memory Lab, you’ll explore your memories with the help of a holographic AI to uncover a thrilling conspiracy in the world of Blade Runner. Memory Lab comes to Rift October 19 and Gear VR October 26.
“It was important to create something that wasn’t just an advertisement for the movie,” said Head of Experiences at Oculus, Colum Slevin. “We wanted to make something that could stand on its own narratively.”
We are very excited to see that some movie studios are using the360VR format to promote their films, although this is more than a simple advertisement for the film, a format which we hope more studios emulate.
